Seismic Protection of Structures

Seismic exposure has extended over many centuries, but the serious, thoughtful seismic design has occurred over the past 100 years. Many regions live with the constant threat of natural calamities such as floods, earthquakes, tsunamis. Due to such calamities machines, facilities, buildings, bridges, and other infrastructures are damaged or destroyed and human lives are in danger. Earthquakes occur all of a sudden and come with no warnings. to prevent all the losses and for keeping human lives safe one should start using and implementing Seismic Protection for the structures helps to save lives and minimize damages to the structure.

following are the probable structure that can get damaged due to earthquakes:

  1. House height risk component and material (Nuclear Facilities some chemical plants)
  2. Bridges and viaducts
  3. Public buildings (Hospitals, Emergency control centers, Energy and Communication distribution centers
  4. The structure which is important to the national defense
  5. Hause costly components and electronic equipment.
  6. Museum, Historic, Artistic monuments.

In the Year 2020-21, the latest earthquake happened in Australia. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake caused damages in the city of Melbourne on 22 Sept 2021. The quake hit northeast of Australia. Second most population city near the town of Mansfield at a depth of 10km. The US Geotechnical Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 5.8 later revised it up to 5.9.

Similarly, another earthquake incident happened in India, on 24th Sept 2021. It was an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale struck near Campbell Bay in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday night, as per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were felt around 8:35 pm at the depth of 63 kilometers.

Such events are devastating and can be threatening to human lives and can cause serious damages to the infrastructure in developing countries such as India.

To overcome all this and create a safe and sustainable environment, we have to start utilizing seismic protection for structures. The main purpose is to vanish seismic energy and to reduce the effect of quakes on buildings and other infrastructure.

Seismic Protection can be given to the infra with the help of-

  • Hysteretic Dampers – by the inclusion of this special element, the earthquake resistance of many structures can be increased hysteretic damper developed for their required rigidity and energy-absorbing feature.
  • Visco Elastic Dampers- viscoelastic dampers are passive control devices. they are a good alternative to base solution in retrofitting damaged they are considered to be ab ideal shock absorption device
  • Fluid Viscous Dampers- Fluid viscous dampers, or seismic dampers as they are sometimes referred to, are hydraulic devices that, when stroked, dissipate the energy placed on a structure by seismic events, wind buffering, or thermal motion

With the help of engineering marvels and concepts used worldwide in the field of Structural Engineering, engineers have managed successfully to reduce seismic shocks and prevent infrastructures from them.

The technology exists practically and can be used in seismic-prone areas and increase sustainability.
